Charlene Clare Freestone (née Upshaw) Jan. 17, 1943 – Jan. 24, 2026 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother CHARLENE CLARE FREESTONE on January 24, 2026. Mom passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family, at the age of 83 in Peterborough, ON. Charlene was born in Nova Scotia on January 17, 1943. She moved to Toronto one year later and lived in that city for over 70 years. She moved to Peterborough, ON in 2021. Charlene was 1 of 14 children. Charlene had many friends and acquaintances in Toronto and enjoyed spending time socializing with friends in the Coxwell/Gerrard area of Toronto. Charlene will be deeply missed by many, especially lifelong friends like Elsie – a friend of mom’s for over 70 years! They went to Brownies together at the age of 7. Charlene was a working mother at both Sears and MacLean-Hunter. Charlene loved spending time socializing and singing karaoke and in the last few years in Peterborough she became friends to many at her Parkhill Towers Apartment residence. She played bingo on Mondays, Darts on Wednesdays and had food and drinks with her special friend Jim Patterson at “Happy Hour” every other Friday. Charlene was proud to be a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Charlie and Pearl Upshaw. She is survived by siblings Barry, Larry, Peggy, and Allen Upshaw and predeceased by 9 other siblings. She is also survived by her children Laurie (predeceased, May 2025), Donny, Daniel (Susan), Darryl, Derek (Cherie) and David. Charlene was also predeceased by Donald Harold Freestone, her husband of over 45 years. A cremation service took place on January 30, 2026 as per her wish, in Lakefield, ON. A celebration of life will be announced to family and friends in the near future. A special thank you to Palliative Care & Dr. Blake at PRHC, as well as Hospice Care Peterborough. Mom was comfortable and at peace. Thank you to all who cared for her, especially nurse Kathy, thank you!
